Kömür and Dardari in action – Saad nets late winner
Jakić and Croatia qualify for the World Cup
The final international break of the year is well underway, with Kristijan Jakić becoming the latest FCA player to book his ticket for next year’s World Cup. Some of his teammates were also in action and put in some impressive performances.
Germany fought their way to a 2-0 win in Luxembourg. The underdogs held their own especially in the first half, thanks in part to Aiman Dardari, who narrowly missed giving Luxembourg the lead in the 18th minute. For Germany, Finn Dahmen stayed on the bench and did not feature. On the final matchday against Slovakia, a draw will be enough for Germany to secure World Cup qualification.
Kristijan Jakić did not play in Croatia’s 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands, but he still had reason to celebrate: the 2018 World Cup runners-up are uncatchable at the top of Group L and have therefore secured qualification for next summer’s tournament.
Kade makes his debut for Germany U21s
Germany U21s comfortably beat Malta 6-0 in U21 EUROs qualifying. Mert Kömür was in the starting lineup and provided assists for both the opener and the third goal, before he was substituted in the 78th minute. Anton Kade celebrated his U21s debut, as he was brought into the action in the 66th minute.
Tunisia used the international break to play a friendly against Jordan, having already qualified for the World Cup. Elias Saad and Ismaël Gharbi were both in the starting XI for the game. Saad scored the winner in the 85th minute with a powerful left-footed shot to make it 3-2 before being substituted in stoppage time. Gharbi was brought off in the 62nd minute.
Samuel Essende saw no playing time in DR Congo’s 1-0 play-off semi-final win over Cameroon. The striker will now have a big match coming up in Morocco on Sunday at 20:00 CET, as they take on Nigeria in the play-off final, with the winner set to earn a spot at the World Cup.
