July & August: Captain Baier leaves the club

2020 Year in Review

2020 was a year shaped by the coronavirus pandemic, although FCA still managed to have a successful year, securing their Bundesliga status for a tenth successive year. We're taking a look back at everything that's happened over the last 12 months in our Year in Review. July saw captain Daniel Baier leave, and more players left the club in August – although there were some new faces too.

After FCA brought Rafał Gikiewicz, Tobias Strobl und Daniel Caligiuri to the club, there were also new faces in the coaching team. Iraklis Metaxas joined the club as another assistant to head coach Heiko Herrlich. FCA also recruited goalkeeping coach Kristian Barbuscak to succeed Zdenko Miletic.

There were more changes in the squad too. Captain Daniel Baier left the club after more than eleven years and 355 competitive games. After discussions with the board, FCA and Baier mutually agreed to end the player’s contract. In order to allow him a fitting farewell with the fans, sporting director Stefan Reuter arranged a testimonial match for Augsburg’s record-breaking player.

Goalkeepers Luthe and Giefer depart

As well as the captain, two goalkeepers also departed. Andreas Luthe made the move to 1. FC Union Berlin, and Fabian Giefer signed for Würzburger Kickers. Whilst Tim Rieder moved permanently to Kaiserslautern, Maurice Malone (Wiesbaden), Sergio Córdova (Bielefeld), Kevin Danso (Düsseldorf) and Jozo Stanić (Zwickau) moved on loan for the season to get more match practice.

FCA didn’t hold a training camp due to the coronavirus pandemic, instead preparing for their tenth year in the Bundesliga in Augsburg. In the six friendlies against lower-league Bavarian sides, Augsburg were unbeaten.
