Herrlich: “We need to improve”

Bénes faces his parent club

First Team 11.03.2021, 15:47

FCA will host Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday night in the Bundesliga (20:30 CET). While midfielder László Bénes is looking forward to seeing his old teammates, head coach Heiko Herrlich wants to see more from his side after the defeat in Berlin last weekend.

“We definitely have to improve,” stressed Heiko Herrlich at the pre-match press conference on Thursday. “The important thing is that we don’t lose the ball as easily. We’ve worked on that and I’m confident we will better against Gladbach.”

Borussia have their own problems, having not won any of their last six games (D2, L4). Marco Rose’s side have slipped into mid-table after this run. “Gladbach are still in the Champions League,” pointed out Herrlich. “We can’t focus on whether or not they are in good form – we have to look at ourselves.”

László Bénes, who played for Gladbach in the first half of the season, also rates his former team highly. “Gladbach have a really good side,” said the 23-year-old. “They’ve not had good results recently, but we know it will still be tough. We can win the game if we improve on our performance in Berlin and play to our strengths.”

Bénes: “It provides some extra motivation“

Bénes scored his first goal for the club in Berlin last weekend. “He’s always got an eye on who is free and speeds up our play,” praised Herrlich. The coach also added: “He’s definitely an improvement to our side.”

Bénes played 40 times in the Bundesliga between 2016 and 2021 for Gladbach, scoring one goal. Now he will face his old teammates. “It will provide me with some extra motivation and I’m looking forward to taking them on.” Bénes also believes his parent club will still reach Europe this season: “I’m certain that they will win a few more games – just not tomorrow’s!”
