FCA suffered their second defeat of the season last night away to Bayer 04 Leverkusen (3-1). “You have to say that Leverkusen deserved to win,” summarised coach Heiko  Herrlich.

Florian Niederlechner: “A point or a win would have been great – we could definitely have taken something from today’s game. We came from behind after the penalty and had the chance to go ahead. I was a bit unselfish and maybe should have shot myself. These two losses against two great teams won’t throw us off course. We need to go again against Mainz next time.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Going behind from the penalty was really unlucky because up until that point we had done really well away to a top side. We came back and had the chance to make it 2-1 after equalising, which makes it even more frustrating that we lost in the end.”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “This defeat hurts. I would have liked to take some points for my birthday today. We gifted them two goals from set pieces. We need to accept the fact that we lost to a top team in Leverkusen, but as a goalkeeper I’m never happy to concede three goals.”

Ruben Vargas: “Coming back from 1-0 down away to a top team like Leverkusen shows that we are in a good place. We combined well and we could have taken something from today’s game. You could see that the equaliser gave us a real push, but Leverkusen played well until the final whistle and scored the decisive goals.”

Heiko Herrlich: “We made life difficult for Leverkusen with a good performance. It was an open game and at the time we deserved our equaliser. Unfortunately, we let in two set-piece goals after going a long time without letting in one from a dead ball. We didn’t take our chances to go ahead and you have to say that Leverkusen had a few good opportunities and ultimately deserved to win.”

Peter Bosz: “We are pleased with our performance against a well-organised side. FCA’s running put a lot of pressure on us. They were the better side for the start of the second half as we conceded the equaliser. We then improved and used the space available to us. We deserved the win in the end but it wasn’t easy.”
