Herrlich: "Trying to make the best of it"

First Team 26.03.2020, 10:04

Heiko Herrlich has been head coach at FC Augsburg for around three weeks. Due to the Coronavirus, he is yet to experience a game from the dugout. He has however now experienced his first FCA Fan TV interview, taking the time between training sessions to speak about the following:

His arrival at FC Augsburg:  "That was obviously a really unusual situation. It was a quick decision to join FCA, but suddenly the news was being dominated by the spread of Coronavirus and the games were logically called off. Obviously I would have liked to get straight to it, but under the current circumstances that sadly isn’t possible."

Training:  "We gave the players a few days off to start with and this week we’ve been able to start training in groups again. In line with all the protective measures, we are trying to make the best of what is available to us."

Precautions being taken to adhere to the protective measures: "Passing drills, shooting drills and athletic training exercises are good to do at the moment, because you don’t get too close to one another. There are multiple changing rooms at the ground which we’ve separated the players among in order to keep physical contact between the groups as low as possible."

Training targets: "There is hope that the games will at some point be played behind closed doors and we obviously want to be well prepared for that."

The effects of Coronavirus on football: "I don’t think all of us in the sporting department actually realised right away how difficult it would be for the clubs to stay afloat. It’s not just about the players, after all, but around 50,000 employees in the football industry in Germany. Aside from that, football is an important aspect of society and people will definitely miss it."
