Herrlich: “In my opinion, it wasn’t a penalty”

Post-match reaction following defeat to Stuttgart

First Team 10.01.2021, 18:34

FC Augsburg lost 4-1 against VfB Stuttgart in their first home game of the year. “Today was a setback, but we will pick ourselves up again,” said head coach Heiko Herrlich. We’ve rounded up all the post-match reaction to the game.

Florian Niederlechner:
“We started well, but then had a penalty given against us that shouldn’t have been given, in my opinion. After that, VfB did extremely well. Our goal gave us some confidence but Stuttgart deservedly won today.”

Daniel Caligiuri: “We started well, whereas Stuttgart were waiting for counter-attacks to come up, which they made the most of. The penalty was a deciding moment in the game, but in my opinion it was a soft call. Things got really difficult after we conceded the second, but we give up. We were close to equalising after the break, but were unable to. We’ve missed out on a chance to solidify our spot in mid-table. We will need to take the next step as a team, but still have a long journey ahead of us.”

Rafal Gikiewicz: “We made things way too easy for Stuttgart today and are all unhappy with our performance. We need to analyse the game, but one thing is certain: we cannot allow ourselves to make as many mistakes in defence. We need to put this game behind us, recover from it and head to Bremen in search of three points.”

Reece Oxford: “We gave away too much today, which we need to work on improving as a team. I don’t think that we’re a bad home team; Stuttgart were just an extremely tough opponent today. It’s too bad that we weren’t able to build on our goal, and we’re left empty-handed today.”

Heriko Herrlich: “We wanted to press high, which we were able to do. In my opinion, it wasn’t a penalty and it changed the course of the game. After that, it was difficult because VfB are extremely strong on the counter. We continued to attack after going 2-0 down, but lacked the ability to finish. We switched to a back four at half-time, and scored immediately after. We kept pushing but weren’t able to create any big chances. The red card was the final blow. Today was a setback, but we will pick ourselves back up again.”

Pellegrino Matarazzo: “We needed some time to find our way into the game. We weren’t prepared for FCA to press that high. It took some time for us to find the space. Midway through the first half we were able to mount some good attacks. I liked that it didn’t take us long to find our shape again after Augsburg scored. Overall, it was a good performance.”
