Herrlich: "Their quick-fire double sapped our energy a little

FCA were beaten 3-1 at home to TSG Hoffenheim on Wednesday night of the Bundesliga’s midweek matchday. "In the second half, we didn’t manage to put them under as much pressure, which is how Hoffenheim were able to grow stronger," said Heiko Herrlich in his post-match analysis. We’ve collated his and other quotes on the game below.

Daniel Baier: “We wanted to secure safety ourselves. The other results weren’t necessarily to be expected, but we shouldn’t be relying on other results, we didn’t get any points for ourselves. We played really well in the first half, but conceded soft goals in the second half. We threw everything at them at the end, but it didn’t come off. We need to take points on Saturday and secure our safety once and for all.”

Philipp Max: "Obviously we really wanted to get a result and confirm safety. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that, because Fortuna also picked up a point. We had high hopes for this game and actually played well for large parts of it. We had our chances, but after going behind we weren’t able to turn the game around."

Ruben Vargas: "It’s a disappointing result, we would have loved to win today, but we continue to focus on ourselves. We don’t care what the other teams are doing. We know that nothing will be given to us on a plate. Now it’s time to put things right in Düsseldorf on Saturday."

Marek Suchý: "It was a good game from both teams – both we and Hoffenheim looked good going forward. After going 2-0 down it was difficult to find our way back into the game, even with managing to pull a goal back. In Mainz we took a big step and unfortunately we weren’t able to take the final one. Now we want to take it in Düsseldorf."

Heiko Herrlich: "We started well and had a good first half. We defended well and created a few chances for ourselves. In the second half, we didn’t manage to put as much pressure on them, which is how Hoffenheim were able to grow stronger. The quick-fire double sapped our energy a little, but the team showed good character to pull a goal back. I felt like we were on the front foot after halving the deficit, but in the end they deserved to win. Survival remains in our hands so we will travel to Düsseldorf full of confidence."

Alexander Rosen: "The first half was an even contest – Augsburg had a few more chances than we did; we gave away the ball too easily and too often. The second half started in the balance as well, but after the two goals in quick succession we were able to apply more pressure. After their goal, our lead looked in danger – you could see how much they wanted to equalise, so when we made it 3-1 we were obviously very relieved."
