Home win! FCA beat Wolfsburg 3-1
Two academy graduates on target
It was a day of homegrown goals and first-time scorers, as FC Augsburg earned a deserved 3-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 6 to celebrate their first home win of the Bundesliga season.
Head coach Sandro Wagner made five changes to the side that lost 2-1 in Heidenheim last weekend: Academy product Noahkai Banks was joined in the starting XI by Elvis Rexhbecaj, Dimitris Giannoulis, Elias Saad and Mert Kömür.
In front of a sold-out home crowd, FCA made a flying start. After a short corner in the fourth minute, Kömür whipped in a pinpoint cross from the inside left channel. Arriving at the back post, 18-year-old Banks met it with conviction and smashed the ball in under the crossbar for his first-ever Bundesliga goal.
Augsburg continued to press high against a Wolfsburg side still trying to find their rhythm, though much of the play took place in midfield for the remainder of the first period. Around the half-hour mark, FCA threatened again when captain Kristijan Jakić surged forward and squared the ball into the box, where Saad’s clever backheel forced a fine save from goalkeeper Kamil Grabara (29’).
At the other end, Wolfsburg’s first real chance saw Svanberg strike the outside of the post from distance (32’). Just before the break, Kömür intercepted a misplaced pass from the visitors and immediately let fly, only for Jenz to make a vital block (43’).
Kömür and Fellhauer on the scoresheet
The second half began much like the first, with Augsburg on the front foot. In the 52nd minute, Chrislain Matsima drove forward from defence and teed up Kömür, who finished from close range to make it 2-0. Eleven minutes later, the 19-year-old was involved again, winning the ball in midfield before combining with Fabian Rieder. The Swiss midfielder squared for Robin Fellhauer, who fired home left-footed from just inside the box for 3-0 (63’). It was the summer signing’s first Bundesliga goal.
Wolfsburg hit back two minutes later through Adam Daghim (65’), before Kömür had the ball in the net again at the other end – this time denied by an offside flag (67’). The game settled into a calmer rhythm in the closing stages, with both sides enjoying longer spells of possession and probing for openings. No further goals followed, and Augsburg ran out 3-1 winners to secure their first home victory of the campaign.
The Bundesliga now pauses for two weeks for the international break. Wagner’s side will return to action away to newly promoted 1. FC Köln on Saturday, 18th October (15:30 CEST).
