Seven goals on Sunday evening
On matchday 28 of the Bundesliga season, FC Augsburg were defeated by a clinical Stuttgart side. Despite twice threatening a comeback in the second half, FCA eventually succumbed to a 5-2 loss after a chaotic encounter at the WWK ARENA.
In comparison to last weekend, Manuel Baum made two changes to the starting line-up. Elvis Rexhbecaj and Noahkai Banks returned to the side in place of Kristijan Jakić and Arthur Chaves. Yannik Keitel missed the fixture against his former club, as he continues to suffer from bursitis. Uchenna Ogundu returned to the matchday squad for the first time since recovering from an ankle injury.
The game got off to a fast start. FCA looked to get forward, but Stuttgart were alert and clinical from the word go. In the 12th minute, Finn Dahmen managed to avert a cross away from danger, but Deniz Undav was lingering in the six-yard box and capitalised on the clearance to make it 1-0 to the visitors. FCA tried to muster a response through Alexis Claude-Maurice, but his long-range effort didn’t cause any problems for Alexander Nübel (35’).
Midway through the half, Stuttgart extended their lead twice with back-to-back goals in quick succession. First, Thiago Tomas scored with a drilled finish from Nikolas Nartey’s cross to make it 2-0 (29’). Just two minutes later, Nartey whipped another venomous ball into the box, this time finding the back of the net to add to the away side’s lead (31’).
Augsburg remained determined but struggled to make their presence felt in this period of the match. Shortly before the break, things almost went from bad to worse for the hosts. Referee Felix Zwayer pointed to the spot following Han-Noah Massengo’s challenge on Lorenz Assignon. However, after a VAR check, the referee reversed his decision of a Stuttgart penalty, and FCA went into the break trailing 3-0.
FCA came out for the second half with a lot of energy and penned VfB back into their own half for long periods of time. Manuel Baum reacted to the scoreline at the interval by bringing on three sets of fresh legs in Arthur Chaves, Anton Kade and Michael Gregoritsch.
An Augsburg goal began to look more and more probable with each passing minute. After a long pass forward, Gregoritsch nodded the ball down to Cédric Zesiger at the back post, whose powerful effort flew narrowly past the post (56’). Shortly after that, they would have their reward. Finn Jeltsch blocked two attempts from Claude-Maurice, but the rebound then fell to Fabian Rieder who fired home powerfully to get a goal back for FCA (57’).
The celebrations were short-lived, however. Chris Führich managed to dance past Chaves in the box and saw his shot from an acute angle saved by Dahmen, but the rebound landed at Undav’s feet. The attacker poked the ball into the net from six yards out to make it 4-1, restoring Stuttgart’s three-goal advantage (58’).
Undeterred, FCA managed to respond in style. Dimitris Giannoulis put a whipped cross into the box from the left wing, where substitute Jakić got a shot off from six yards out. He was denied by Nübel, though onrushing fellow substitute Anton Kade latched onto the loose ball and found the back of the net to reduce the deficit once more (71’).
After the second FCA goal, the game slowed down substantially, but the next – and final – goal was scored by the away side. In the 82nd minute, another loose ball fell to Undav, who played a pass across the face of goal and into the path of Ermedin Demirović. The striker then tapped the ball into the Augsburg goal from short range, and the match ultimately finished with a 5-2 scoreline.
The result means that FCA’s streak of eight consecutive games unbeaten at home has come to an end. Augsburg won’t be in Bundesliga action for the next couple of weeks due to the international break. Their next league game will be played on Easter Saturday, when they travel to take on Hamburger SV (4th April, 15:30 CET).
