February: Big win over Mainz

Review of the year 2021, part two

Club 24.12.2021, 10:00

As the new year comes in, FC Augsburg are taking a look back over the last 12 months. Next up in the review of the year: February.

The new month began with two transfers. Felix Götze left the club on a six-month loan deal to 1. FC Kaiserslautern, while László Bénes joined from Borussia Mönchengladbach until the end of the season. The new signing went straight into the starting XI against Wolfsburg, but was on the losing side with his new teammates (2-0).

The Fuggerstädter were also beaten at RB Leipzig. After being 2-0 down at the break, a Daniel Caligiuri penalty gave FCA some hope in the second half, however it ended 2-1 and Augsburg had to make the long journey home without any points. Following three straight defeats, FCA were only four points clear of the relegation play-off position.

Leverkusen shock FCA in added time

The pressure was starting to mount ahead of FCA’s home game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Going into this match, Augsburg had still never beaten the Werkself in the Bundesliga. It looked like this terrible run would finally be over after Florian Niederlechner opened the scoring in the 5th minute. That was, however, until the fourth minute of injury time when Leverkusen stole a point with a late equaliser, meaning FCA’s wait for a league victory over B04 continues.

FCA were able to put the disappointment of that late equaliser behind them quickly. André Hahn scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win at 1. FSV Mainz 05, a result that made the table look a lot better for Augsburg. With 11 matchdays to go, the Fuggerstädter were now eight points clear of 16th.
