FCA well beaten in Dortmund

First Team 17.08.2019, 23:40
Augsburg wanted to put last week’s exit from the DFB-Pokal behind them, making six changes from the loss to SC Verl. Bundesliga debuts were handed to Tomáš Koubek, Mads Pedersen, Marek Suchy and Ruben Vargas with Tim Rieder and Marco Richter named only on the bench. Just as last season’s spectacle in Dortmund, which ended 4-3, started off with fireworks, so did this year’s as FCA struck past ex-Augsburg player Marwin Hitz after just 31 seconds. After some quick passing between Ruben Vargas, Carlos Gruezo and Mads Pedersen, Florian Niederlechner was on hand to open the scoring for Augsburg – the second fastest Augsburg goal in Bundesliga history. Just two minutes later though, everything changed as Tomáš Koubek could only parry a Jadon Sancho pass with his feet and in doing so layed the ball in front of Paco Alcacer who made it 1-1 (3’).  Koubek would show his class though as he brilliantly saved a great strike from Julian Weigl in the 10th minute. After that the game went quiet with Dortmund attempting to stamp their authority on the game and Augsburg happy to sit back and counter through new boys Ruben Vargas and Mads Pedersen. The chances kept coming for Dortmund but time after time new signing Koubek would stand in their way. First he saved from Marco Reus (25’) and then smartly from Axel Witsel (27’), helping send the teams in to the break at 1-1. Shock after half time Dortmund came out of the break firing yet again and had a large share of the ball. Augsburg tried hard to stem the tide but it would be in vain as Sancho gave the home side the lead after a ball across the box was dealt with by neither Koubek nor Pedersen. It then got even worse for the visitors: just a few minutes later Marco Reus made it 3-1 (57’) before Alcacer pounced to make it 4-1 with his second of the game (59’). After the shock of conceding three goals in 10 minutes, Augsburg were eager to hit back but Dortmund simply sat back and continued to look the more dangerous. Augsburg couldn’t find a way through and couldn’t break down a strong Dortmund defence. The final moment of a second half to forget for Augsburg came as Dortmund brought on new signing Julian Brandt who proceeded to volley in a long ball from Axel Witsel past Koubek to make it 5-1. After the failure in the opening game, Augsburg now turn their attentions to this coming Saturday when they face newly promoted 1. FC Union Berlin at the WWK Arena.
