FCA unveil special-edition shirt celebrating the Fugger era

Renaissance heritage

First Team 20.02.2026, 18:00

With an exclusive special-edition shirt, FC Augsburg are paying tribute to one of the most defining eras in the city’s history, bridging the time of the Fuggers and the Renaissance with the present day. Created in close collaboration with the Fugger family and kit supplier Mizuno, the shirt will be worn by FCA’s first team in the home game against 1. FC Köln.

“Augsburg is rich in history, from its Roman past to the Fugger era. With this new special-edition shirt, we’re showing just how strongly that period continues to shape our city today,” said FCA CEO Michael Ströll. “The shirt combines a modern, contemporary design with a host of details from the Fugger era, picking up on a term that’s deeply connected to FCA: Fuggers' city.”

“The history of the Fugger foundations – and with it the Fugger family – is inseparably linked with Augsburg. That FC Augsburg are making this tradition visible with their own special-edition shirt fills us with great joy and pride. The term ‘Fuggers' city’ will now take its place on the pitch in a very special way,” added Alexander Erbgraf Fugger-Babenhausen, chair of the Fugger family seniorate.

Available online now – in fan shops from Saturday

Presented in a premium box with a pink ribbon, a copper wax seal embossed with a Zirbelnuss, and a key ring, the special-edition shirt is available now in the FCA online shop at shop.fcaugsburg.de. From Saturday, 21st February at 10:00 CET, it will also be available in the fan shop on Maximilianstraße, the fan shop at the WWK ARENA and at the VR-Bank on Annastraße.

The shirt is available in men's, women's and children's sizes, as well as a dark-blue version (goalkeeper shirt) in men's sizes. The price is €94.95 for men’s sizes S to 4XL and women’s 'Female Fit' sizes XS to XL, and €74.95 for children’s sizes 116 to 164. The long-sleeve version in sizes S to 3XL costs €104.95.

Augsburg and the Fuggers

In the 16th century, Augsburg developed into one of the most important trading centres north of the Alps – shaped in large part by the Fugger family, who first built their success through the weaving trade before rising over three generations to become the city’s leading merchant dynasty. Their influence can still be seen today in Augsburg’s art, culture and architecture and has been in the spotlight again recently, as December 2025 marked the 500th anniversary of Jakob Fugger’s death.

Iconic buildings such as the world-famous Fuggerei – the oldest social housing complex still in existence – the Fugger Chapel at St. Anna, and the bathhouses of the historic Fugger houses stand as emblematic examples of the era, and also served as the backdrop for the photo and video shoots for the new shirt.

Renaissance meets modernity

The historic significance of the Fugger era is reflected in the design of the special-edition shirt. The linen-coloured shirt is a nod to the Fuggers’ involvement in the textile trade in the 16th century, while the dark-blue version is a visual reference to the magnificent organ in the Fugger Chapel at St. Anna. Both shirts feature an all-over pattern of the Fugger family’s lily crest. The crest itself, along with the sponsor logos, have been designed in an elegant copper tone in reference to the copper trade, which the Fugger family expanded across Europe – particularly under Jakob Fugger.

The collar and cuffs add carefully chosen colour accents: pink references the ceiling frescoes of the burial chapel at St. Anna, blue and yellow reflect the Fugger family’s heraldic colours, while burgundy and dark green link the design to FCA’s club colours. The Fugger crest features on the back of the neck, while “FUGGERSTADT” replaces the usual “FC Augsburg” lettering on the back. The bespoke Renaissance-inspired typeface is also used for the squad numbers and is further enhanced with special details.

Social commitment with the Fuggerei

The design is rounded off by a golden appliqué, referencing the Rhenish gulden that Jakob Fugger set in the founding charter in 1521 as the annual rent for residents of the Fuggerei.

To this day, the annual rent in the Fuggerei still equals one Rhenish gulden – the equivalent of €0.88. In keeping with that tradition, FC Augsburg will donate one symbolic gulden from every special-edition shirt sold to the Fuggerei, which has provided a social home for people in need in Augsburg for more than 500 years.
