In their opening friendly of their pre-season training camp in Tyrol, FC Augsburg secured an impressive 4-1 victory against Galatasaray in Innsbruck. FCA head coach Martin Schmidt prepared for the friendly with the Turkish champions without the services of club captain Daniel Baier, who missed the match with injury. Five summer signings started for the Fuggerstädter on Thursday evening in Innsbruck alongside academy product Stefano Russo. FCA immediately placed their Turkish opponents under pressure in the opening exchanges, playing the ball around at a high intensity. Augsburg also created the first chance of the match as Florian Niederlechner fired a shot wide of Ismail Cipe’s goal. However, the new signing from Freiburg didn’t have to wait long before celebrating the opening goal. After an impressive counter attack, André Hahn played in Niederlechner who converted this chance to give Augsburg a deserved lead (14’). Galatasaray were dominating possession at this point in the match but struggled to break down a resolute Augsburg defence. A Jimmy Durmaz free-kick, which fell narrowly wide of Andreas Luthe’s post, was the closest the Süper Lig champions came to drawing level (26’). After testing Cipe again in the 22nd minute, Niederlechner was again involved as Augsburg doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark. Carlos Gruezo tried his luck from 25 metres out and despite the final touch coming off Niederlechner, the Ecuadorian celebrated his first FCA goal (31’). Two goals in as many minutes seal victory – Hahn and Russo add their names to scoresheet Schmidt made one change at half-time and new substitute Marco Richter made an immediate impact to set up André Hahn at the far post to score Augsburg third goal of the evening. Just two minutes, Augsburg added their fourth goal as Russo fired a shot home to celebrate a memorable goal. The match started to lost its flow in the closing stages as Schmidt made no less than nine changes to his lineup. Galatasaray failed to offer much in attack until the latter stages. A Konstantinos Mitroglu header, which was easily caught by Luthe, was the closest the Turkish club until the final five minutes of the match (63’). At the other end, FCA academy product Dorian Cevis’s spectacular volley was denied by the post (69’). Just as the match started to fade into an uneventful ending, Fatih Terim’s side got on the scoresheet as Ömer Bayram was played through and slotted the ball beyond Luthe to give Galatasaray a consolation (87’). Augsburg held on to secure an impressive 4-1 victory. On Friday, 26th July, FCA will play in their second tough friendly of the pre-season training camp. The Fuggerstädter will travel down the Inn river from Innsbruck to Schwaz where their face Spanish La Liga side Villarreal (18:00 CEST).
