FC Augsburg picked up a 3-1 away win at Werder Bremen on matchday 32. Anton Kade was the Man of the Match, scoring twice to put FCA firmly on course for all three points.
FCA head coach Manuel Baum made one change to the side that drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt, with Chrislain Matsima returning from injury to make his first start since matchday 14. The afternoon was dampened, however, by problems for the travelling support. Most of the 1,200 FCA fans were forced to turn back halfway because of a faulty train, leaving the away end only half full.
Bremen had slightly the better of the opening stages, before efforts from distance at both ends brought the first moments of danger. Yukinari Sugawara fired narrowly wide (6’), while Michael Gregoritsch tried his luck from range shortly afterwards (9’). FCA grew into the game as the half went on and took the lead in the 24th minute. Gregoritsch was given too much space and slipped a superb pass through to Anton Kade, who slotted the ball past Werder goalkeeper Mio Backhaus.
The game remained tightly contested. With Han-Noah Massengo already on a booking, FCA chose not to take any chances and replaced him with Kristijan Jakić in the 36th minute. Just as the first half looked as if it would finish with the score at 1-0, Augsburg struck again in stoppage time. Giannoulis delivered an excellent cross from the left and Kade headed in from close range to make it 2-0 (45’+3).
Bremen pull one back, Jakić restores two-goal cushion
Werder made three changes at the break and came out with more urgency. They almost got an immediate reward, but Finn Dahmen produced a superb one-on-one save to deny Justin Njinmah (48’). FCA then had a big chance to make it 3-0 at the other end. Alexis Claude-Maurice cut inside, shifted the ball neatly onto his right foot and curled an effort towards the far corner from around 15 yards, but Backhaus was equal to it (61’).
Bremen did find a way back into the game soon afterwards. FCA failed to clear their lines and Romano Schmid got a shot off from the edge of the box, reducing the deficit to 2-1 (64’). Augsburg’s response came quickly. Claude-Maurice’s corner was flicked on at the near post by the recently introduced substitute Marius Wolf, and Jakić was waiting at the back post to turn the ball home for 3-1 (69’).
FCA had further chances on the break in the closing stages, while the hosts threatened once more in the 90th minute when Marco Grüll rattled the crossbar. Soon after, the final whistle sounded in front of 40,000 spectators at the Weserstadion.
