FCA battle hard for a point

First Team 26.11.2016, 13:53
FC Augsburg will travel back from Cologne with a point in the bag following a hard-fought draw against  1. FC Köln. In what was a intense game, both teams shared the spoils in a goalless draw on matchday 12 of the Bundesliga. Head coach Dirk Schuster named the exact same side which played out a goalless draw against Hertha BSC a week ago. On the bench, however, youth team player Kevin Danso was making his first appearance in a matchday squad for FCA. The home side came out of the blocks fast. In just the second minute of the game, Frederik Sörensen got the better of Philipp Max down the right hand side, before firing his shot on to the post from a tight angle. Yuya Osaka then tried his luck from the edge of the box, but Marwin Hitz made a superb save to keep out his effort (11’). Three minutes later, Anothny Modeste headed over Hitz’s goal after a tempting cross from Konstantin Rausch. The home side were combining well in the Augsburg half. After the opening exchanges, however, FCA began to find their way in the game. Konstantinos Stafylidis’s free-kick from 25 yards out forced Thomas Kessler into a fine diving save (21’). Shortly afterward, Klesser was again in the action this time saving a shot from distance from Philipp Max (26’). Both sides went into the break goalless. Köln began the second half with a lot of purpose. In the 48th minute, Jonas Hector tested Marvin Hitz from distance, while at the other end of the pitch Dominik Kohr’s long range effort went well over the Köln goal (54’). Augsburg then sat deep within in their own half and rarely threatened the home side’s goal. Now and again, however, FCA did manage to find space in the Köln half. After good work from Philipp Max, Jonathan Schmid’s defelcted shot went just wide of the far post and out for a corner. As time went on, the Billy Goats created fewer and fewer chances, while the visitors began to grow in confidence. Yet in the 82nd minute, the ball landed at the feet of Marcel Hartel whose powerful first time shot was brilliantly saved by Hitz in the FCA goal. It lead to an entertaining finish to the game at the Rhein-Energie-Stadion, in which Dong-Won Ji had a chance to steal all three points with a header in the dying stages. After 95 minutes, however, the game ended goalless.
