FCA draw 1-1 in a friendly against Heidenheim

All square in the Voith-Arena

FC Augsburg continued their unbeaten run with a 1-1 draw in a friendly against 1. FC Heidenheim on Friday afternoon.

FCA were without seven players for the trip to face Heidenheim, who were all away with their respective countries on international duty. Several players who hadn’t featured much recently were thus able to get some valuable minutes. Captain Jeffrey Gouweeleuw was rested.

The first chance of the afternoon went to the home side. Denis Thomalla’s shot narrowly went past the FCA goal. Augsburg, just as they did in the last league game against Dortmund (2-0 win), then went ahead from a set piece. A Daniel Caligiuri corner was headed home by Marek Suchý from close range to give the Fuggerstädter the lead (8’).

Augsburg came close to a second goal in the 22nd minute. Noah Sarenren Bazee burst through the middle and played it to Florian Niederlechner. The angle was tight for the attacker though, and he only found the side-netting. At the other end, Dennis Thomalla was free but Rafał Gikiewicz easily saved his effort.

Theuerkauf levels things

Heidenheim won a free kick on the edge of the box in the 33rd minute after Tobias Strobl fouled Marc Schnatterer. Norman Theuerkauf’s free kick went underneath the Augsburg wall and found the back of the net.

FCH had gained confidence from their goal and almost took the lead before the break. Andreas Geipl’s volley from close range was blocked by Suchý at the last minute to keep the scores level going into half time.

Chances for both teams

FCA made two changes for the second 45 minutes. Benjamin Leneis replaced Gikiewicz in goal, while Felix Götze came on for Felix Uduokhai. Leneis was tested right away, making a brilliant save from a long-range shot by Merveille Biankadi (49’). Marco Richter than had three bright moments for the visiting side. He was denied twice by the FCH keeper Vitus Eicher and missed the target from a tight angle on the third occasion.

The next FCA changes came on the hour mark. Caligiuri was replaced by Rani Khedira and Iago took Raphael Framberger’s place at full back. Richter had two more shots from range (67’, 72’), meanwhile André Hahn came on for Niederlechner in the 71st minute for Augsburg’s last change of the day.

Leneis was again on hand to deny a Heidenheim goal (79’), before Suchý commited a foul in a dangerous area with just two minutes to play. Thankfully, it led to nothing though. That wasn’t the final action of the day in Heidenheim however. A deflection landed on the Augsburg crossbar and Reece Oxford managed to clear the subsequent danger (90’).

After the late chance for FCH, referee Martin Petersen blew up, meaning it finished 1-1 in the Voith-Arena. Augsburg’s first game after the international break is at home to table toppers RB Leipzig on Saturday, 17th October (15:30 CEST).

FCA: Gikiewicz (46' Leneis) – Framberger (61' Iago), Suchý, Uduokhai (46' Götze), Pedersen – Oxford, Strobl – Caligiuri (61' Khedira), Richter, Sarenren Bazee – Niederlechner (71' Hahn)

Goals: 0-1 Suchý (8'), 1-1 Theuerkauf (34')
