FCA adjust future course with personnel changes

New setup for backroom staff

First Team 01.07.2021, 15:20

The FC Augsburg return to team training on Thursday as pre-season for the 2021/22 campaign begins and head coach Markus Weinzierl will be supported by a new-look backroom staff.

“We’re always looking for ways to evolve at FC Augsburg and stay on top of the increasing demands that come with working in professional football. That is why we have decided to specialise some responsibilities and change our setup in various departments. This will allow us to take a more individualised and specialised approach in the future when it comes to working and developing our players,” said FCA sporting director Stefan Reuter.

Christoph Janker becomes head of professional football

The first change sees former player Christoph Janker leave his role as talent manager at FCA to take on the new position of head of professional football. Working underneath sporting director Stefan Reuter, Janker will be jointly responsible for various first-team matters, including the personnel and structure of the backroom staff. He will also act as a link to the youth academy in order to make the step up to first-team football more accessible, and will also play a role in squad planning.

“Christoph Janker already began to think outside the box during his playing career and simultaneously earned a business management degree. After retiring, he immediately added to his skillset by gaining his coaching badges and observing work practices at various clubs and associations. Alongside his qualifications, Christoph has also done a fantastic job as talent manager over the last year and a half, so it soon became clear that we wanted to hand this responsibility to him in this newly created role. I’m looking forward to working closely with him,” said Stefan Reuter.

“It’s an exciting new task and one that sees me carry a lot of responsibility regarding first-team matters. It’s important that we work with our players on an individual basis in a variety of areas and further develop the team behind the team in order to take FCA forward step by step,” said Christoph Janker about his new position.

Daniel Müller takes over as head of the medical department

On top of that, a position has also been created to head the entire medical department and will be filled by current rehab coach Daniel Müller. He will coordinate the rehab training and physiotherapy departments, as well as the club’s team of doctors. Frank Rossner joins from Leipzig to replace Müller as rehab coach, while Christoph Sollors, Nikolas Guschl and Martin Miller will make up the team of physiotherapists. FCA have also made changes to their team doctors, agreeing a new cooperation with the Augsburg Arthroklinik. Therefore, Dr. Andreas Weigel will be joined by Dr. Jens-Ulrich Otto, Dr. Karsten Bogner and Thomas Rebele from the practice to make up the club’s team of doctors.

Meanwhile, physiotherapist Markus Zeyer, who has joined Viktoria Köln, and team doctors Dr. Florian Elser and Dr. Christian Wimmer have left the club. “We would like to thank them all for their years of service for FCA and wish them the very best for the future,” said Stefan Reuter.
