Personnel decisions at FCA

Some expiring contracts will not be extended

Following the appointment of new head coach Enrico Maaßen, a number of personnel decisions have been made at FC Augsburg. After extensive talks, it has been decided that the expiring contracts of Jan Morávek and Alfred Finnbogason will not be extended. Enrico Maaßen’s assistant at Borussia Dortmund II, Sebastian Block, will accompany the new head coach at Augsburg and the expiring contracts of assistant coaches Tobias Zellner and Rainer Maurer will therefore also not be extended. Sporting director Stefan Reuter clarified these decisions with each of those affected.

“We haven’t taken these decisions lightly. After we appointed our new head coach, we agreed that we would take a new path and make some changes,” explained Stefan Reuter. “Jan Morávek (who joined the club in 2012) and Alfred Finnbogason have played important roles both on and off the pitch that have allowed us to stay in the Bundesliga for twelve successive seasons. The same goes for Tobias Zellner and Rainer Maurer, even though they haven’t been with the club for quite as long. We would like to thank them for all their commitment and we wish them all the best for the future.”

“Playing for the same club for ten years in this day and age is something very special. I would like to thank those in charge at the club, my coaches, my teammates and the fans, for giving me the chance to play for FC Augsburg for such a long time. My family and I were really happy in Augsburg and we will look back on our time here with great fondness. I wish FC Augsburg nothing but the best for the future and I will keep my fingers crossed for them in the Bundesliga next season,” said Jan Morávek, who arrived from FC Schalke back in 2012. He made 132 appearances in his ten years at the club.

“I have spent more time at FC Augsburg than I have at any other club. I will never forget my time here. After spells in Belgium, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain and Greece, I have found my second home at this club. I am incredibly grateful for that,” said Alfred Finnbogason, who joined FCA in 2016. The 33-year-old made a total of 122 appearances for the club and his 37 Bundesliga goals are the most of any Augsburg player in the top flight. “Augsburg will always be a special place to me, not just because of my successful time at the football club, but also because my children were born here,” said the Icelander.

FCA have also discussed the possibility of a send-off for the players at the WWK ARENA, so that the fans can say a proper goodbye. This will of course have to be arranged with the new clubs and FCA will remain in close contact with the players so that it can be arranged as soon as possible.
