December: FCA end the year on a roll

Club 03.01.2020, 13:56

The year 2019 is coming to an end - a good time to take a look at twelve exciting and emotional months full of ups and downs. December saw a historic four assists in one game, first FCA goals for several players, and a prolific defender.

December began with a home game against Mainz, who at the time were FCA’s neighbours in the table. Despite a strong start from Schmidt’s men, the Zerofivers went ahead early on. Nevertheless, goals from Marco Richter and Florian Niederlechner turned the game around to earn Augsburg a well-deserved 2-1 win.

The final week before Christmas was a double gameweek, which began with a trip to TSG Hoffenheim. Augsburg’s run continued as they picked up their first ever Bundesliga win at Hoffenheim. Philipp Max scored twice, while Fredrik Jensen and Iago both netted their first Bundesliga goals in an important 4-2 away victory. Niederlechner amazingly assisted all four of the goals – the first FCA player to do so in the top flight. “Thankfully somebody was always there,” joked Niederlechner after a “fantastic game”.

Another Max brace as FCA beat Fortuna 3-0

Fortuna Düsseldorf visited the WWK-Arena for the final home game of 2019. Augsburg’s strong finish to 2019 was backed up by a confident 3-0 win. Max scored a second consecutive brace, while Tin Jedvaj bagged his first goal in Augsburg colours. “This was a real test for us today,” said Martin Schmidt, whose side had taken five wins from their last six games.

The decade concluded with a trip to Leipzig to face the side top of the table. Unfortunately, the run came to an end, although Niederlechner’s eighth goal of the season had given the travelling fans some hope. RBL managed to turn it around to win 3-1, but despite that Augsburg ended the year in tenth place with 23 points – eight points clear of the relegation play-off position.
