December: Hahn and Dorsch defeat Köln

Review of the year 2021, part 12

As the new year comes in, FC Augsburg are taking a look back over the last 12 months. In the final part of the review of the year: December.

As 2021 drew to a close, the Corona infection rates started to rise rapidly once again. As a result of this, the majority of the academy teams began the winter break early, whilst fans were no longer allowed to attend first-team games at the end of the year.

Without their fans in the ground, FCA suffered a painful first half at home to VfL Bochum, going in 3-0 down at the break. Markus Weinzierl’s team, however, rallied after the interval to fight back, with Michael Gregoritsch and Daniel Caligiuri netting. Despite a number of good chances to equalise late on, it ended 3-2 to the visitors.

First away win in almost 10 months

Away from the pitch, FCA started putting the building blocks in place for a greater social responsibility in the future. The three key aspects of the club’s new sustainability strategy are social commitment, education and exercise, and protection of the environment and climate.

Matchday 15 in the Bundesliga began with FCA making the trip to Cologne. In a hard-fought game, Weinzierl’s men allowed the hosts few chances and were then clinical late on to steal all three points. André Hahn stabbed home an opener, before an absolutely stunning long-distance strike from Niklas Dorsch sealed the victory. This was FCA’s first win on their travels all season – and the first for almost 10 months.

Strong reaction against Leipzig

The final home game of 2021 saw RB Leipzig visit Augsburg. After being 1-0 down at half time, FCA came back to earn a point via a Daniel Caligiuri penalty. The last game of the first half of the season was away to SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Even though the Fuggerstädter had more chances, they couldn’t find a goal and thus it ended goalless.

That draw saw FCA go into the winter break on 18 points in 15th, not far off mid-table. A strong run towards the end of the year, which saw Augsburg collect 12 points from eight games, will give everyone hope of a successful second half to the season.
