December: FCA in action during World Cup break

2022 in review: part twelve

Club 30.12.2022, 09:07

An emotional 12 months full of highs and lows are drawing to a close. As we enter the last few weeks of the year, FC Augsburg are looking back on the last 365 days. In the twelfth part of our series, we look at December.

This year’s December was a unique one. The Bundesliga had been in its mid-season break since mi November and while some FCA players enjoyed a holiday, the World Cup was in full swing.

For Ecuador and Carlos Gruezo, the tournament came to an end after the group stage. Things went better for Robert Gumny (Poland) and Ruben Vargas (Switzerland), who reached the knockout round. Vargas started every game for Switzerland and set up the winning goal in the decisive 3-2 vicotry over Serbia in the group stage. However, the last 16 was the end of the road for the two players, with Poland losing 3-1 to France and Switzerland suffering a 6-1 defeat to Portugal, meaning that no FCA players made it into the final eight.

After individual holidays, World Cup participants Gruezo, Gumny and Vargas returned to FCA training. The team has been back in action since the beginning of December as they prepare for the second half of the season. Two friendlies were scheduled and were played on the training pitches at the WWK ARENA. In the first game, FCA recorded a convincing 3-0 victory against Grasshopper Club Zürich, before another victory in their second game: a 2-0 win over 1. FC Heidenheim.

Mulled wine and punch for a good cause

This year, FCA once again supported radio media partner HITRADIO RT1's "Firma mit Herz" ("Company with a Heart") campaign. Across five different dates, FCA players Niklas Dorsch, Ermedin Demirović, Florian Niederlechner, Rafał Gikiewicz as well as head coach Enrico Maaßen and assistant Sebastian Block served mulled wine and punch for charitable causes at Augsburg's Christmas market.

In addition, FCA were also involved in RT1's donation marathon, with players Elvis Rexhbecaj, Raphael Framberger and captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw taking calls on the donation phone line. All donations were made towards the "Kartei der Not", which supports people from the region who find themselves in need through no fault of their own.
