First training session in the late afternoon
FC Augsburg have landed in Spain! 30 outfield players, four goalkeepers and the full coaching and backroom staff made the trip to Algorfa in the provice of Alicante on Wednesday afternoon. The following eight days will see the Fuggerstädter set the foundations for a successful second half of the Bundesliga season.
The team had barely got themselves unpacked at the hotel before the first training session kicked off. Among the squad was Frederik Winther, the team singing “Happy Birthday” for him on his 22nd birthday. Youth stars Marcel Lubik, Daniel Katic, Mert Kömür, Franjo Ivanovic, Josue Mbila, Mahmut Kücüksahin and Davide Dell’Erba, who have been able to hone there skills with the first team on many previous occasions, also made the journey to Spain. FCA have visited the country before; the Costa Blanca hosted one of the club’s 2019 training camps.
Loan returnee Sergio Córdova and new signing Arne Engels, whose signing was announced on Tuesday, were also on board. 19-year-old Belgian Engels, who joined from Club Brugge, was described by head coach Enrico Maaßen as “a calm and level-headed player, who has enjoyed a fantastic footballing education”. Maaßen was also impressed by the surroundings in Algorfa as soon as he arrived: “It’s wonderful to be back on the pitch once again. The weather, the hotel and the pitches are all fantastic!”
Thursday sees the squad make the short walk to the training pitches for two planned sessions. Apart from long-term absentees André Hahn and Tobias Strobl, the entire squad is available – one or two players will be managing their workload individually. The first 90-minute test for the team will come on Saturday January 7th, as FCA take on 1. FC Union Berlin in a double friendly. The following Wednesday, the 11th, sees the team face Hungarian champions Ferencvaros in another friendly.
