Dahmen: “We deserved more”

Post-match reaction following the defeat in Stuttgart

FC Augsburg are going home empty-handed after a defeat in Stuttgart on Sunday evening. Two goals and a strong performance were not enough to get a result. Here’s all the reaction to the match.

Fabian Rieder: “We took the lead twice and were still beaten in the end. That’s very disappointing. The performance was good today, just like it was against Dortmund last time out. We shouldn’t be losing these games. Nevertheless, this gives us confidence for the weeks ahead. We need to keep working, pull together and stick to our plan. In terms of our defence, we’re conceding too many goals at the moment. That starts from the front and goes all the way to the backline. If we become more clinical and convert our chances better, we’ll start winning again. It was special for me to play and score here against my old club today. In the end, though, the overriding emotion is disappointment.”

Keven Schlotterbeck: “We threw everything at it. That makes the fact that we’re coming away with nothing even harder to take. Now, we need to recover, make the most of the international break and come back stronger. The foul on Zagadou wasn’t a penalty for me. It was a normal challenge. Both players were using their arms and he went down in a very unnatural way. We’ll keep fighting. We all have to work together, from the physio to the coaches to us players.”

Han-Noah Massengo: “It was an unbelievable feeling to score my first goal. It wasn’t just my first goal for FCA, but also my first as a senior footballer. However, it’s very disappointing that we’re  going home empty-handed. We took the lead twice, which makes the loss even more frustrating. But it was a different type of feeling after a defeat. We went toe-to-toe with a strong opponent and we have to take that as a positive. Now, in the international break, we need to recover well and then give everything on the training pitch so that we can get a home win over HSV.”

Anton Kade: “We simply shouldn’t have lost. We’re having so much bad luck at the moment. There was a questionable penalty, but there was also a chance to lead 3-2, and we didn’t take it. Right now, we just need that little bit of luck on our side in different situations. We executed our game plan really well and put in a good performance, but, in the end, this hasn’t won us any points. That’s obviously frustrating. We’re determined to pick up all three points when we host Hamburg after the international break.”

Finn Dahmen: “The defeat is tough to take. I thought we played well and deserved a lot more. We were very efficient in front of goal in the first half. It was obviously disappointing that we conceded an equaliser soon after both our goals. A lot of things are just going against us at the moment, but complaining won’t do us any good. We have to keep working hard, and then we’ll get the points we deserve soon.”

Sandro Wagner: “We obviously wanted more today and wanted to pick up points. We prepared well during the week, played well in many phases of the game and executed our game plan in the way we’d hoped. We wanted to hurt VfB, and we put in a really good performance after our three losses in a week. That gives us encouragement. Currently, we simply don’t have the momentum on our side. In the end, we’re very frustrated and disappointed that we couldn’t get the win.”

Sebastian Hoeneß (VfB Stuttgart head coach): “We actually started well, but we didn’t look great when we conceded the first goal. The equaliser was important, even though our best period in the first half was interrupted by us conceding a second goal. It was important that we levelled again before the break. We were better in the second half and had a few half chances. That chance that Augsburg missed was the moment of the game, because we eventually scored the winning goal in a very hard-fought and difficult match. The opponent made it really tough for us.”
