Dahmen: “We thought the game would go differently”
The reaction to the 4-0 defeat in Stuttgart
FC Augsburg were beaten 4-0 by VfB Stuttgart on matchday 33 of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season. Read all the post-match reaction here.
Finn Dahmen: “Obviously, we thought that the game today would go very differently and were convinced beforehand that we could win here in Stuttgart. 4-0 is a really disappointing result. After conceding early on and going a man down, it really was the worst possible start you could think of to a match. It was clear that it was going to be tough. I think that the first half was otherwise pretty okay from our point of view. We went 2-0 down early on in the second half. If that was the final score, we’d just have to grin and bear it. But the final 15 minutes were an absolute disaster from us – that should never happen. It’s important and our goal now is clear: ending the season with a win at home against Union Berlin and heading into the summer with at least one good result under our belt.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Playing Stuttgart with eleven men is already tricky enough. The early red card was tough to take as a result. Following that, we tried to wait for our chances and then take them. Ultimately, however, we only had one half chance before the break. We conceded a second goal shortly after half time - the game was essentially over. It was really quiet in the dressing room after the final whistle because we’re all really frustrated with the defeat. But now we’ve got to build ourselves up again. The season isn’t over yet. Now, it’s all about winning the last home game of the season for the fans.”
Jess Thorup: “When you want to come away from Stuttgart with some points, you’ve got to be on the ball from the outset. Of course, the early goal and sending off made things pretty difficult. Even though there was no intent in the foul, the red card is a fair decision. I think that we dealt with being a man down well in the first half and had a few chances on the counter. In the second half, we set ourselves the goal of staying in with a chance for as long as possible. All hopes of that went out of the window after they made it 2-0 five minutes later, though. As disappointed as we are, we’ve got to admit that Stuttgart deserved to win.”
Sebastian Hoeneß: “We started the game really well and took the lead early on. Then came the red card and we took full control of the game. Nevertheless, injuries kept us on our toes. You could see that from the team today. Ahead of the second half, we aimed to be as active as possible from the outset and take full control of the game. We managed to do exactly that with the second goal. I’m glad that we were able to get our reward for playing this way by scoring four goals and keeping another clean sheet.”
