Dahmen: “Couldn’t produce the performance that we’re capable of”
Match reaction following 4-0 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach
FC Augsburg’s return to action following the winter break finished 4-0 to hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach. Read on for the post-match reaction from both camps.
Finn Dahmen: “That was the exact opposite of what we had hoped today would look like. We weren’t compact enough, we allowed them far too much space and our play just wasn’t clean enough. In the past, we’ve shown that we’re capable of performances a lot better than that, but we couldn’t produce anything near good enough tonight. In this busy period with a midweek game coming up, we have to get our performance back to the right level. It’s a good thing that we’re going to get right back in the thick of it and we’ve got the chance to show a reaction.”
Keven Schlotterbeck: “We deserved to get nothing out of that game, and it was a fair margin of defeat. We weren’t direct enough and gave the ball away too often. Gladbach countered very well and scored three goals from four or five chances in the first half. If you’re even a little off the pace in terms of mentality and intensity, it simply isn’t enough to win a Bundesliga match. The compactness that defined our play before the winter break wasn’t there. We have to do better in four days’ time.”
Manuel Baum, FC Augsburg head coach: “We conceded four goals today, which is, of course, far too many, especially given the way they came about. We wanted to stay compact and hold firm, but through poor decision-making in the right moment, we lost control of the game. Even though we grew into the match a little more in the second half, both our defending and attacking play were not good enough today. These are fundamental parts of the game we need to be doing well if we want to win matches.”
Eugen Polanski, Borussia Mönchengladbach head coach: “We’re extremely pleased with the result and the three points. We brought a lot of energy onto the pitch, had some very good moments and were really efficient. Not only that, but we managed to keep a clean sheet. All in all, it was an excellent team performance that we worked very hard for.”
