Courage, versatility and potential: Suso in focus
New arrival from Düsseldorf
At 21 years of age, standing 6ft 3in tall and able to operate in a number of positions, left-footer Sima Suso offers much to FC Augsburg. Despite his youth, the new signing has already gained experience at academy level, in the third tier and in Bundesliga 2.
Suso spent time in the academies of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Fortuna Köln and Dynamo Dresden before joining Fortuna Düsseldorf. He continued his development with Fortuna’s U17s and U19s, gradually working his way towards first-team football. Suso made his senior debut against 1. FC Nürnberg on 2nd December 2023.
The next step came in the 2024/25 season, when he was sent on loan to Hansa Rostock to gain further experience in the senior game. He made 11 appearances in the 3. Liga as the north-German club narrowly missed out on promotion.
Regular game time in Bundesliga 2
Armed with that experience, Suso returned to Düsseldorf and featured consistently in the second division during the 2025/26 season. The 21-year-old made 24 appearances, featuring for a total of 1,485 minutes. His only goal came at home to 1. FC Kaiserslautern on matchday 11, when he found the top corner with a superb left-footed strike to make it 1-1.
The campaign also showed how much Suso had developed. Fortuna mainly used him in central midfield, where he offered physical presence, work rate and composure in possession. He also featured on the left and at centre-back, with that versatility forming a key part of his game.
Strong in the challenge and assured on the ball
The statistics tell a similar story. Suso won 57 per cent of his duels and completed 82 per cent of his passes, demonstrating that he could hold his own in several regards at second-tier level. Although Fortuna were relegated to the 3. Liga, the young left-footer used the season to cement his place in senior football.
His ability to operate in several positions has also been evident at international level. Suso has represented Germany at U18 and U19 level and most recently made four appearances for the U20s in the U20 Elite League. He was deployed at left-back, further underlining his adaptability.
Taking his next step in Augsburg
A move to FC Augsburg now provides Suso with his next challenge. FCA sporting director Benni Weber said: “Sima offers a hugely exciting blend of qualities. He can play in a number of positions and, despite his young age, already has plenty of senior experience. The fact that he featured regularly in Bundesliga 2 last season underlines both his quality and his considerable potential.”
Suso added: “I’m delighted to be joining FC Augsburg. The environment here is ideal for me to continue developing as a player and to achieve success together with the team.”
