Baum: “I hope that all of Augsburg will have their fingers crossed for us”
Final game of the season in Berlin
FC Augsburg travel to face 1. FC Union Berlin on the final matchday of the Bundesliga season. FCA will be hoping to crown a successful season with a win at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
“We’re looking forward to the game in Berlin and know what’s still possible for us to achieve. Our focus is on ourselves, however, and we really want to win the final game of the season,” said head coach Manuel Baum. After beating Borussia Mönchengladbach in their final home game last weekend, FCA are now hoping to end the campaign with three more points on the road.
FCA are currently in ninth place, level on points with Eintracht Frankfurt and just one point behind SC Freiburg in seventh, which would be enough to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. “First, we have to win our game – everything else is out of our hands,” said Baum. “At the same time, we’re eager to make this season one to remember.”
Ahead of the final matchday, Baum is focused on making sure his side have the right balance of focus and excitement. “The players are extremely focused, but at the same time you can sense just how much they’re looking forward to this last game. I hope that all of Augsburg will have their fingers crossed for us,” said the 46-year-old. He added, “Union are a team that are particularly strong from set pieces. Additionally, they have several veteran players in their squad. But we’re in good form and will be sure to give it everything we have.”
2,500 FCA fans expected in Berlin
Unlike in recent weeks, Baum will be without several players this weekend. Arthur Chaves is unavailable due to a bruised knee, while Dimitris Giannoulis is sidelined with a muscular injury. Kristijan Jakić is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow of the season. Elvis Rexhbecaj, who has been sidelined with injury recently, and Alexis Claude-Maurice, who suffered a knock to the ankle against Gladbach last weekend, are both doubts.
FCA will be supported by nearly 2,500 fans in Berlin, with club having sold out its contingent of away tickets. The fans are calling for everyone to wear their FCA shirts to the game.
