Baum: The team want to progress far into this season’s competition

First Team 29.10.2018, 23:34
FC Augsburg host 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday, 30th October (20:45 CET). FCA head coach Manuel Baum wants his team to advance to the third round of the competition with a win in the WWK ARENA. FC Augsburg are entering a busy week following their 2-1 away win in Hannover on Saturday. FCA return home to the WWK ARENA on Tuesday night to host 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the DFB-Pokal before hosting 1. FC Nürnberg in the Bundesliga this coming Saturday afternoon. Despite the close proximity of the matches, Manuel Baum has seen a lot of ambition from his side ahead of their cup clash. “The team and I have been working together for quite some time. The players have quickly adjusted from the Hannover match into our preparations to face Mainz on Tuesday. You can see in training that the players want to progress far into this season’s competition.” In the previous meeting between FCA and Mainz this season, the visitors suffered an unfortunate late defeat as Mainz came from behind to win 2-1. Manuel Baum wants his side to learn their lesson from this defeat. “We have looked at what we could do better compared with our previous performance against Mainz to progress into the third round. We don’t judge Mainz by the amount of goals they score, instead by how they create chances to score. We want to give another strong performance defensively just like we did in Hannover.” The cup is like the Olympics Augsburg central defender Martin Hinteregger regards the DFB Pokal as similar to the Olympics for skiers. “As an Austrian, I believe the cup is similar to the Olympics for skiers. Either you want to win a medal or you needn't bother turning up. So either you want to get to Berlin or you don't. We want to go to Berlin. That is the beauty of the cup!"
