Baum: “It didn’t go the way we wanted it to”

First Team 19.09.2018, 12:00
On Tuesday, FC Augsburg started their preparations for their upcoming home match with Werder Bremen on Saturday (15:30 CEST). The defeat in Mainz has been analysed with the focus now on Saturday’s clash in the WWK Arena. After the team’s training session, FCA coach Manuel Baum spoke about... …the squad: “Martin Hinteregger bruised his knee during the Mainz game. He had to leave the match as we went on to lose 2-1. He initially won’t be able to train and we don’t know yet whether he will be able to face Bremen. Alfred Finnbogason will partly participate in team training but will likely not feature on Saturday.I haven’t got any worries regarding strikers but I feel very sorry for Dong-Won Ji. He had played very well in pre-season and scored a very good individual goal on Saturday.” …the goals conceded in Mainz: “It was a stupid series of events. The first free-kick should have been a throw-in but the ball somehow hit Hinteregger’s hand and then the free-kick came into the box. Fabian Giefer couldn’t collect the ball and it fell half a metre away from the goal-line. Anthony Ujah rose slightly higher than Rani Khedira and rests on Rani, pushing him down in the process. It was again a throw-in for the second goal. It was three against one and Caiuby goes for the header. Fabi comes off his line but cannot gather and the ball falls unkindly to Maxim all alone. The ball was also deflected meaning Jeffrey Gouweleeuw couldn’t intervene. You can see from this that we suffered from a series of unfortunate events.” …the previous match against Mainz: “The result aside, we didn’t do a couple of other things right. In the Gladbach match, we had the best highest percentage of tackles won in the Bundesliga and we couldn’t replicate this against Mainz. The hosts put in 24 crosses in the match compared with just ten for us, which is something we usually are better at. Overall, the match didn’t go the way we wanted it to and the team has recognised that. We will work hard this week ahead of Saturday.” …upcoming opponents Werder Bremen: “Bremen is a very interesting team, who are aiming to play in European competitions. They have also improved their squad by signing Nuri Sahin, Davy Klaasen and Martin Harnik. They had a good team last year and it will be a tough game on Saturday. In contrast to Mainz, their playing style is more creative and they possess one of the best players in the Bundesliga in Max Kruse.”
