Baum: “We were too careless for both goals”

The reaction to the 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim

FC Augsburg and TSG Hoffenheim had to settle for a draw under the floodlights at the WWK ARENA. Read all the post-match reaction here.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “My injury lay-off was a difficult period for me. Five months is a very long time. It was brilliant to be able to play again today. That was a great feeling. Hoffenheim have a lot of quality, but we started the game well and made it tough for them. We gave two goals away too cheaply. Obviously, we were unlucky with the penalty, but that’s part of football. Alexis is hugely important to the team.”

Fabian Rieder: “We put in a very mature performance against a very strong team. We had a lot of good spells during the game and when they did come forward, we mostly dealt with it. However, Hoffenheim are a top side who take their chances when they come. We’ll take the point, as each one is vital in terms of the table. We’re a young team, but we still want to get three points in Leverkusen next week.”

Finn Dahmen: “That must have been a great game for the viewer, as the momentum swung one way and then the other. Overall, that was a very good performance from us. We would have deserved the win. Ultimately, it’s an unfortunate result, especially when you look at the goals we conceded. We did a lot right defensively – Hoffenheim didn’t have many chances – but there are still things we need to improve on.”

Michael Gregoritsch: “We played with a lot of intensity and could have won the match. After going 2-0 up, we briefly lost some of our structure, but then we recovered and kept playing how we did at the start, so we would have deserved the win. That was definitely an improved performance, even if we’re disappointed that we didn’t get all three points. Next week, we want to produce a repeat of our victory over Leverkusen earlier this season.”

Manuel Baum (FC Augsburg head coach): “Over the 90 minutes, we put in a strong performance against one of the best sides in the Bundesliga. We definitely wanted the three points and we could easily have got more out of the game, not just because of the penalty late on. We started well with two goals and then began to defend slightly deeper. The manner in which we then conceded the two goals makes them even more frustrating. We were too careless in both situations. That’s why it’s disappointing that we haven’t reached the 35-point mark, even though our performance was solid overall.”

Christian Ilzer (TSG Hoffenheim head coach): “That was an eventful game. We definitely wanted to win the match, but we have to be satisfied with a point after how the game played out. Overall, Augsburg came closer to victory, as they took the lead, missed a penalty and hit the bar. That made it all the more important that my team showed great spirit and came back from 2-0 down. I was disappointed that we fell behind so early on. We weren’t strong enough in the challenge for both goals. That’s something we need to put right.”
