FCA defender Maximilian Bauer has been selected in the final squad for the Germany U21 national team ahead of the U21 European Championship. The tournament takes place from 21st June to 8th July in Georgia and Romania.

After the injured Jordan Beyer (FC Burnley), Jan Thielmann (1. FC Köln) and Patrick Osterhage (VfL Bochum) were forced to miss out, head coach Antonio Di Salvo named 23 players to try and defend their title. The Germany side were European champions in 2021 after a 1-0 win against Portugal, with Arne Maier, Niklas Dorsch, Mergim Berisha and Finn Dahmen all in the starting eleven.

“I have had the honour to play with some U21 European champions at Augsburg. They also say, ‘It was unbelievable!’ We want to build on that. We know we have a long way to go, but it would be a childhood dream to win it,” said Bauer in an interview on Monday.

Training camp in South Tyrol

Bauer is currently with his U21 teammates at the training camp in South Tyrol. On Monday, the FCA defender was substituted on at the break in the 7-0 friendly win over a select team from South Tyrol. The final game before the European Championship will take place on Friday behind closed doors, when Germany take on the Switzerland U21 national team.

The first match of the European Championship for Germany is on Thursday 22nd June (18:00 CEST) in Kutaisi against Israel, followed by Czech Republic on Sunday 25th June (18:00 CEST). Their last group game is against England on Wednesday 28th June (18:00 CEST).

In addition to Bauer, Arne Engels was also called up to the final squad ahead of the European Championship squad for the Belgium U21 national team.
