August: The fans return

Review of the year 2021, part eight

Club 30.12.2021, 10:00

As the new year comes in, FC Augsburg are taking a look back over the last 12 months. Next up in the review of the year: August.

The new season kicked off with a first-round DFB-Pokal tie at Greifswalder SC. The cup match began badly for FCA as the fifth-tier side took the lead after less than two minutes. The Fuggerstädter improved to turn the game around in the end, though. Frederik Winther equalised on his competitive debut, before Florian Niederlechner, Fredrik Jensen and André Hahn sealed a 4-2 win with second-half goals.

FCA were able to secure the signing of another U21 European Champion shortly afterwards with Arne Maier coming in from Hertha BSC. There was another new face in the academy too, Claus Schromm taking over as the head of the youth teams. Meanwhile, academy prospects Kevin Danso and Marco Richter left the club to sign for RC Lens and Hertha BSC respectively.

First point of the season in Frankfurt

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim visited the WWK Arena on the opening matchday of the new Bundesliga season. For the first time in almost a year, fans were allowed to attend a competitive game. It wasn’t a joyous return, however, with FCA losing 4-0. The team put in a better performance a week later, holding Eintracht Frankfurt to a 0-0 draw on the road to pick up the first point of the new campaign.

The second home game of 2021/22 also saw the Fuggerstädter fail to collect any points. Weinzierl’s team matched Bayer 04 Leverkusen for large parts of the game, but ended up losing 4-1 with Iago and Niederlechner both scoring own goals. During the subsequent international break, FCA strengthened the squad with the loan signing of Andi Zeqiri from Brighton & Hove Albion, whilst Maurice Malone also departed on a temporary deal to 1. FC Heidenheim.
