April: Augsburg sticks together in the face of the pandemic

2020 Year in Review

Club 27.12.2020, 09:00

2020 will be remembered largely for the Coronavirus pandemic, but it was also a successful year for FCA, as the club ensured their top-flight status for the tenth consecutive season. We're taking a look back at everything that's happened over the last 12 eventful months, in our Year in Review. While the Bundesliga was on hold due to the pandemic, April saw the FCA players take part in various social campaigns.

After taking part in at-home training to keep fit, the team were allowed to return to the pitch to train in April. These sessions took place in small groups and in accordance with the protective hygiene measures. The sessions were centered around passing and shooting drills, as well as fitness work.

“It’s great to have the ball back at our feet,” said André Hahn. Meanwhile, Heiko Herrlich’s first weeks in charge continued to take place under special circumstances. “We’re trying to make the best of it,” said Herrlich. “The hope is that we will be able to return to playing at some point, but behind closed doors. We want to be as prepared as possible for that moment.”

Off the pitch, FCA began a charitable campaign under the hashtag #augsburghältzusammen2020 (#AugsburgSticksTogether2020), in order to show solidarity in these tough times. Healthcare workers were able to pick up cases of drinks for free at the stadium, while the club also provided support to the Augsburg food bank in order to help those in need. FCA fans were also able to donate online to help support local businesses. The fans supported these and other initiatives wholeheartedly, even starting their own initiatives to provide help in other areas where needed.

The FCA players also pitched in, even surprising some volunteers along the way. As part of a voucher campaign, Hahn and his teammates telephoned several volunteers before personally delivering them their vouchers. “We’re able to give a little back through this campaign,” said Hahn. “Right now, there’s no better feeling than making someone smile.”

The spirit of the #augsburghältzusammen2020 campaign was carried forward by several FCA partners and sponsors. Despite facing major economic difficulties themselves, several partners announced early on that they would be waiving their right to a reimbursement for advertising services that had not been rendered. In this way, they made a significant contribution to the success of several social programs organised by FCA. Additionally, many season ticket holders also turned down a refund on their tickets, in a strong show of solidarity with the club.

FCA says ‘Thank you!’ to the following partners for waiving their reimbursement:
