Alicante: First training session for Gregor Kobel

First Team 05.01.2019, 11:37

Day two of training in Alicante has come to an end. Coach Manuel Baum had the team out training on two separate occasions, with new signing Gregor Kobel making his first appearance.

New signing Gregor Kobel had his first proper day of training with the team on day two of Augsburg’s training camp in Alicante. The goalkeeper, on loan from TSG Hoffenheim, took to the pitch with his new teammates for the first time, after arriving the previous day and only doing a light intervals session. “The team is giving me a focussed but at the same time relaxed vibe,” he says. “I’m certain that I will settle in quickly here. The conditions are brilliant, both on the pitch and in the hotel. Therefore, we’re able to use our time here constructively, preparing ourselves as best as we can for the second half of the season. There are only about two weeks now until our first game of 2019 against Düsseldorf.”

When Gregor speaks of what he hopes to achieve, he puts the team first: “I want to help the team, helping them to have a better second half of the season and help reward ourselves for our performances with points,” says the 21-year-old. He also wants to target his own development, of course: “FCA are offering me a relaxed environment in which I can develop further as a young goalkeeper. I’m therefore excited about the challenges that lay ahead playing here.”

Leaving home at 16 to become a professional footballer

The young Swiss goalkeeper is sharing a room at the training camp with Austrian defender Martin Hinteregger. “It’s working well, as Martin sleeps a lot,” jokes Kobel. A solid period of preparation and exhausting training sessions lay ahead of the 21-year-old, who will wear the number 40 shirt.

Kobel had to get to grips with settling in in unfamiliar environments aged just 16. “I arrived in Germany all by myself,” he says. At first, he lived with a host family, before moving into his own flat and finding his feet. He wants to do the same in Augsburg, finding his own apartment as soon as he returns from Spain. However, his focus for now remains fully on the upcoming training sessions with his new teammates.
