Vargas and Jensen on the scoresheet for FCA

FC Augsburg won 3-1 in their final pre-season friendly ahead of the competitive season getting underway next weekend. FCA beat Italian Serie A side Cagliari 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. Augsburg were firmly on course for victory after the opening half, with one player setting up all three goals for the club.

Head coach Markus Weinzierl was without Felix Uduokhai and Marco Richter (both at the Olympics) for the match, as well as Robert Gumny (adductor issues), Niklas Dorsch (knock), Tobias Strobl (ankle injury) and Daniel Caligiuri (Covid-19).

The game got off to an evenly-matched start in the WWK Arena, with around 4,500 fans in attendance. The first chance fell to Ruben Vargas (10'), with Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno denying Jeffrey Gouweleeuw just minutes later (14'). FCA would open the scoring three minutes later, however, as André Hahn's low cross found its way through to Vargas who tapped home from close range (17'). Gouweleeuw was then forced to leave the pitch with a knock in the 22nd minute, with Dominic Schmidt from the U23s coming on in his place.

Augsburg's young centre-back pairing of Schmidt and Frederik Winther did well to keep the opponents at bay. Winther then played a long ball through to Hahn, who passed it on to Fredrik Jensen for FCA's second goal of the day (37'). Just three minutes later, Vargas would net his second of the game after another assist from Hahn (40').

Niederlechner nearly makes it 4-0 – Pedro cuts the deficit

Wienzierl made three changes at the break, bringing on Iago, Michael Gregoritsch and Alfred Finnbogason. The latter was then involved in a close chance just seconds later. Finnbogason found Niederlechner with a through ball, but he narrowly missed the target on the breakaway (54'). FCA weren't pressing as hard in this phase of the game, but remained fully in control.

Calgiari's first chance came on the hour mark, as Razvan Marin's shot from range sailed wide (60'). Immediately after, Finnbogason then missed down the other end (64'). Substitute Maurice Malone nearly made it 4-0 before Cagliari's Joao Pedro's back-heel made it 3-1 (82').

Augsburg's first competitive game of the season is coming up on Saturday (7th August, 15:30 CEST) as they take on fifth-division side Greifswalder FC in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

FCA: Gikiewicz – Framberger (76' Jakob), Gouweleeuw (22' Schmidt), Winther, Pedersen (46' Iago, 81' Zehnter) – Morávek (46' Gregoritsch), Gruezo – Hahn (68' Dell'Erba), Jensen (46' Finnbogason), Vargas (68' Günther) – Niederlechner (68' Malone)

Goals: 1-0 Vargas (17'), 2-0 Jensen (37'), 3-0 Vargas (40'), 3-1 Pedro (82')
