FCA suffer 5-2 defeat in DFB-Pokal clash with Bayern

Cup journey comes to an end

First Team 19.10.2022, 22:51

Just over a month ago, FCA were celebrating a sensational 1-0 win at home against Bayern, with Mergim Berisha netting the winning goal. Tonight, head coach Enrico Maaßen was unable to call upon the attacker (ankle issue), who was replaced in the starting line-up by Mads Pedersen. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Maximilian Bauer returned at the heart of FCA’s defence having missed the weekend’s match (3-2 loss in Cologne) after serving their yellow-card suspensions.

FCA didn’t need long to look a threat, with Ermedin Demirović beating Dayot Upamecano inside the box. His shot, however, only hit the side netting (2’). Just 60 seconds later, goalkeeper Sven Ulreich nearly fluffed a clearance, with Alphonso Davies able to clear it away from Florian Niederlechner in the nick of time.

Augsburg’s early pressure soon paid off, as Pedersen was able to get off a shot from outside the box that landed in the bottom right corner (9’). In the minutes that followed, it was Bayern who went on the attack, forcing Tomáš Koubek – who was deputising for Rafał Gikiewicz once again – into saves against Jamal Musiala (16’) and Sadio Mané.

The visitors were able to equalise in the 27th minute, as Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was able to slot the ball past Koubek at the near post. Just two minutes later, Benjamin Pavard crossed it to Mané, but his close-range attempt was saved. The teams headed into the half-time break with the score tied at 1-1.

Petkov replaces Gumny, Upamecano scores an own goal

Maaßen made one change at the break, bringing in Lukas Petkov for the injured Robert Gumny. Serge Gnabry hit the crossbar early on, with Mané missing the rebound (47’). Minutes later, Joshua Kimmich won the ball outside the box and fired home to put Bayern ahead (53’). Choupo-Moting then scored his second of the night in the 59th minute.

FCA were able to get back in the game in the 65th minute, as Upamecano poked a cross from Elvis Rexhbecaj into his own net to cut the score to 3-2. Maaßen reacted by bringing on fresh legs in the form of Julian Baumgartlinger, Arne Maier and Daniel Caligiuri. Bayern then restored their two-goal lead in the 74th minute, after Musiala curled a shot past Koubek. The final shot for the hosts came from Maier, while Leon Goretzka (88’) and Marcel Sabitzer (90’) both missed for the visitors. Davies would raise the scoreline to 5-2 in the final minutes of injury time, sending a shot just under the crossbar (90’+2).

The defeat ended FCA’s cup campaign, as the focus now shifts to Saturday’s game (22nd October, 15:30 CEST) against RB Leipzig.
