FCA through to next round with 4-2 win in Greifswald

Winther, Niederlechner, Jensen and Hahn score for FCA

First Team 07.08.2021, 17:36

FC Augsburg are through to the second round of the DFB-Pokal, after a 4-2 win against Greifswalder FC. The fifth-tier side took an early lead, but FCA were able to turn the game in the second half.

Head coach Markus Weinzierl was unable to call upon captain Jeffery Gouweleeuw, who is still recovering from an adductor injury. Weinzierl sent out the same backline as against Cagliari Calcio (3-1 win), with Frederik Winther and new signing Niklas Dorsch both making their competitive debuts for the club.

FCA suffered an early setback, as Velimar Jovanovic and Lucas Knechtel combined on the counter to beat Rafał Gikiewicz in the second minute. Despite enjoying the bulk of possession, FCA struggled to finish their chances in the final third. GFC goalkeeper Adam Marczuk was able to block Jan Morávek's header (5'), while André Hahn sent a shot wide of goal (20').

As the first half ticked to a close, FCA began to create more chances for themselves. Alfred Finnbogason's bicycle kick attempt lacked power (35'), however, before he then had another shot saved by Marczuk (41'). FCA were then able to equalise off the resulting corner, with Winther sweeping home Felix Uduokhai's rebound - his first goal in his first competitive game for the club.

Niederlechner and Jensen get on the board

Finnbogason then came close from close range immediately after the break (48'), before Dorsch hit the crossbar minutes later (51'). A minute later, FCA would have cause to celebrate again as Iago set up Niederlechner, who was able to tap home from close range (52').

Minutes later, FCA would add to their lead. This time, it was substitute Michael Gregoritsch who would play through to Iago. The latter's cross would then be finished off by Fredrik Jensen to make it 3-1 (68').

Jovanovic cuts the deficit - Hahn adds a fourth

Greifswalder were able to cut the deficit shortly after, as Jovanovic finished off a crossf rom Clemens Schröder (69'). With 10 minutes left to play, André Hahn would add a fourth for FCA (80'), chipping it past Marczuk.

WIth the win, Augsburg have advanced to the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Next weekend, they will open the 2021/22 Bundesliga season at home against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
