FCA beat Bayern!

Pedersen and Hahn score against the record champions

First Team 19.11.2021, 22:31

FC Augsburg opened Bundesliga matchday 12 with a 2-1 victory at home against FC Bayern München on Friday night.

Head coach Markus Weinzierl made three changes to the line up following the 1-0 defeat to Wolfsburg last time out. Iago, Niklas Dorsch and André Hahn replaced Ruben Vargas (Covid-19), Tobias Strobl (ACL injury) and Alfred Finnbogason (muscle problems).

After a fast-paced opening few minutes, FCA then sat back and allowed their opponents to have more of the ball. The Bavarians steadily dominated possession, but were unable to break through the FCA backline. Instead, it was the hosts who would go on to take the lead. After a cross from Iago, the ball fell to Mads Pedersen, who powered home a first-time shot to put FCA in front (23').

Bayern struggled to recover from the setback, as FCA were able to double their advantage in the 35th minute. André Hahn got on the end of another cross from Iago and headed past Manuel Neuer to make it 2-0. Bayern responded in a matter of minutes, as Robert Lewandowski cut the deficit with a volley (38').

Gikiewicz denies Lewandowski and Musiala

After the change of ends, Bayern continued to press hard. The record champions came close twice early on in the half, as Lewandowski (50') and Leon Goretzka (54') both sent shots over the bar. FCA threw all their energy into defence, keeping the reigning champions at bay.

It took until the 73rd minute for Bayern to create another goalscoring opportunity for themselves. A shot from Alphonso Davies narrowly sailed wide of goal (73'), before Lewandowski (79') and Jamal Musiala (84') both were denied by Rafał Gikiewicz.

FCA were able to hold on to their lead, on the way to recording their third win of the season - Bayern's second defeat this term. Next Saturday, FCA will travel to the capital to face Hertha BSC (27th Nov., 15:30 CET).
