FCA draw 1-1 in friendly against Schaffhausen

First Team 06.09.2019, 12:32
FC Augsburg used the international break to get in some match practice against Swiss second division side FC Schaffhausen. The friendly ended 1-1. Head coach Martin Schmidt named new signing Felix Uduokhai in the starting XI at centre back, just as he did in Bremen on Sunday. He played alongside Reece Oxford. Up front, the team got a first glimpse of Florian Niederlechner and Alfred Finnbogason as a duo. FCA were dominant from the get go, with the game practically being played in the visitors’ half. The first chance of the game fell to Niederlechner after some lovely link-up play between Mads Pedersen and Philipp Max, but his shot went wide. Shortly afterwards, there was a momentary scare for FCA, as Niederlechner stayed down after being fouled, holding his left shoulder. Fortunately, after some quick medical attention, he was able to carry on. Schaffhausen’s goalkeeper Calvin Heim was just about able to parry the resulting Finnbogason free-kick out for a corner. In the 21st minute, the FCA wall blocked a Schaffhausen free-kick from a similar position, which was the first sign of the visitors creeping into the game. No longer as dominant, Augsburg did continue to have the better of the chances. However, the opening goal of the game fell to Schaffhausen: a corner in the first minute of first-half stoppage time worked its way into the box, where Zé Turbo nodded it past the goalkeeper. Schieber on hand to equalise With six changes to the team, FCA continued to dominate the second half, maintaining long spells of possession and creating chances. The equaliser was a matter of time, and it came 15 minutes into the half. Julian Schieber’s shot slipped through the hands of the Schaffhausen goalkeeper and into goal (60’). Moments later, the visitors came close to retaking the lead, with a close-range header fizzing just wide of Fabian Giefer’s goal. FCA piled on the pressure after finding the equaliser, but neither Finnbogason (66’), nor Hahn (71’), nor Sergio Córdova (75’) managed to bury their chances. Two late Schaffhausen corners also came to nothing, but FCA were unable to make their dominance count and the game ended with a goal apiece. After the international break, FCA will play against Eintracht Frankfurt on September 14th (15:30 CEST kick-off).
