3-0 loss against Hertha is FCA’s third defeat

It was a substandard performance from Augsburg

First Team 07.11.2020, 17:24

FC Augsburg lost their third game of the season against Hertha BSC. It was a substandard performance that ended with a 3-0 defeat.

Head coach Heiko Herrlich was forced into one change from the side that beat 1. FSV Mainz 05 3-1. Robert Gumny made his first start, replacing Raphael Framberger who was missing due to injury.

Hertha came off the back of a 5 match winless run (one draw, four defeats), but they dominated the game from the start. FCA let the visitors have the ball, only pressing them once they entered the attacking half. Matheus Cunha had the first chance of the game, but his effort went well over the bar (15’). But it quickly got a lot closer, as the Brazilian sent a free-kick narrowly past the post (19’). Michael Gregoritsch had an effort that landed on the roof of the goal in the meantime (17’).

Hertha continued to control the game, as FCA became increasingly stuck in the defensive third. Augsburg didn’t attack with any confidence, leaving the ‘Old Lady’ to have most of the first half’s chances. A Niklas Stark header was saved by Rafał Gikiewicz (27‘), before the keeper was forced into a double save by Jhon Cordoba and Matteo Guendouzi (37’). Just before the break, referee Frank Willenborg pointed to the spot after Felix Udokhai brought Cordoba down. Cunha made no mistake and gave Hertha the lead (44’).

Lukebakio increases lead – Piatek finishes things off

The second half began as the first had finished – with a goal for the visitors. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw couldn’t clear a Krzysztof Piatek cross, Dodi Lukebakio took advantage and slotted the ball past Gikiewicz to make it 2-0 (51’). Herrlich reacted and introduced Alfred Finnbogason and Florian Niederlechner up front, who were able to have an immediate impact on the game. Finnbogason put Niederlechner through on goal, but he couldn’t beat Alexander Schwolow (61’).

Augsburg gave Hertha plenty of space as they set up to attack, and the ‘Old Lady’ almost took advantage as Piatek hit the post after a swift counter attack (64’). The rest of the game didn’t give FCA much to shout about. Hertha were defensively solid, didn’t allow the home team any clear chances and finished things off shortly before full time. A long ball put Piatek through, he evaded Gikiewicz and made it 3-0 with a little help from the post (85’).

So Augsburg tasted defeat for the third time this season. Now, the Bundesliga takes a break as attention turns to international football. When it gets going again, FCA will be travelling to Borussia Mönchengladbach (Saturday 21st November, 15:30 CET).
