Weinzierl: "We want to wrap it up now"

André Hahn extends his contract ahead of game vs. Köln

First Team 29.04.2022, 15:19

FC Augsburg are all set to host 1. FC Köln at the WWK ARENA on Saturday afternoon (15:30 CEST). Head coach Markus Weinzierl is optimistic his side will take their chance to secure safety with a win.

FCA are going into the game on the back of last weekend's 2-0 win against VfL Bochum. "It's clear that we need one more win in order to secure safety. We want to achieve that this weekend, so that we can celebrate with our fans," Weinzierl said ahead of Saturday's match.

The head coach will have nearly a full squad to choose from this weekend. In addition to Tobias Strobl and Noah Sarenren Bazee, who are both sidelined with long-term injuries, Mads Pedersen (yellow-card suspension) will also miss the gam against Köln. Iago, who was taken off injured against Bochum, will be part of the squad on Saturday afternoon.

Weinzierl: "Ride this wave of form"

Prior to the game, the club shared the news that André Hahn's contract had been automatically extended to 2023 after the striker had met an appearance clause in his contract. "He's a very important player for us. I had a rough idea of how many games he needed, which is why I wasn't worried about it. It's good that he's staying, as he's an important contact for me and a great guy within the team." said Weinzierl.

The game against Köln will be no easy task, with the Billy Goats currently in seventh place and still having a chance of qualifying for Europe. "We are up against a very strong opponent, who want to qualify for Europe. Köln play a very high-risk game and have two key difference-makers up front in Anthony Modeste and Mark Uth," Weinzierl said about the upcoming opponent.

"We want to focus on ourselves, however. We have had several good games in recent weeks, and managed to pick up several points in the process. We want to ride this wave of form, and now want to wrap things up and secure safety," Weinzierl said about his expectations for this weekend.
