Maurer: “We could’ve taken a point”

Post-match reaction after Freiburg defeat

First Team 19.02.2022, 19:03

FC Augsburg suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Freiburg in the Bundesliga. “We came back well after falling behind early on, but in the end we lacked the cutting edge” admitted assistant Reiner Maurer. The reaction from the game against the Breisgauer.

Michael Gregoritsch: “We should’ve taken a point from that game but we didn’t quite manage it. We should’ve been better defensively for the second goal because that was a crucial moment in the game. We desperately wanted to get that goal in the second half and we came close to doing so but in the end it wasn’t enough. We’ve got to come back firing on all cylinders against Dortmund and show how strong we can be at home.”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “The defeat hurts because we gave away two sloppy goals. I should’ve reacted better in the lead up to the second goal. Then we would have had the chance to go on and win the game. We wanted to get off to a good start and give the fans something to shout about but we ended up conceding after just three minutes and that didn’t help our cause. We need to make sure we keep working hard and we need to try and find our self confidence again in training so we can bring it on a matchday. It’s down to us to get the job done and get the points.”

Reiner Maurer: “I am disappointed with the result because we could’ve taken a point and from my point of view that would’ve been a fair reflection of how the game went. We had great chances to equalise at the end through Alfred Finnbogason or Michael Gregoritsch. We showed some real fight to get back into the game when we went behind. We defended the free kick that led to their second goal poorly. We lacked consistency today, both in defence and in our opponents’ penalty area. We did however show that we have the character to turn games around. This can also take a bit of luck. I would say that Freiburg are the fortunate, but not the undeserved winners. It’s a shame that we’re going home empty handed.”

Christian Streich: “We started the game really well and scored a good goal. Then we went on to concede a goal that we should’ve dealt with better. Overall, we were better today than we were in the last two games. We had the best of the game but in the second half we weren’t composed enough when our chances came and our tackles lacked conviction. In the end, it is not an undeserved victory although Alfred Finnbogason could’ve made it 2-2 at the end. We are delighted to have won in Augsburg for the first time. I wish Augsburg all the best and I hope they stay in the division.”
