Lichtsteiner: "We’ve taken a step forward"

Over the course of his career, Stephan Lichtsteiner has played at the highest level of European football, now he fights for Augsburg in the Bundesliga. Before the game against the 1. FSV Mainz 05 (Saturday 7th December, 15.30 CET) the Swiss man spoke to FCA fan TV about his first few months in Germany, teammate Ruben Vargas and the upcoming home game against the zerofivers.

Stephan Lichtsteiner played for seven years at Juventus Turin - and won the Scudetto with the Old Lady seven times. After a season with Arsenal, with whom he lost in the Europa League final against Chelsea 4-1, he joined FCA in the summer. Instead of fighting for titles, the 35-year-old is now fighting to avoid relegation. Lichtsteiner likes the new challenge. "It’s a great league, great stadiums, especially at home it’s always a great atmosphere," he said.

Lichtsteiner was replaced by Raphael Framberger at right back for the last game, but even from the bench he could be seen cheering on his teammates. "Ultimately, it's about the team and not individual players," said Lichtsteiner. There is a second Swiss international in the FCA squad, who, like Lichtsteiner, also grew up in the small town of Adligenswil. "His development has moved so fast," said Lichtsteiner about the young forward. "He’s already playing incredibly and putting in top performances both during games and in training."

Lichtsteiner: "We’re connecting with each other better now"

In the league, the FCA has stabilised it’s season, taking seven points from the past three games. "We took a step forward, recent results have been great," said the right back on recent performances. "We are on the right track and we’re connecting better as a team now." The next game sees Augsburg go up against Mainz on Sunday. "We have to concentrate on ourselves," said Lichtsteiner. "Then I'm sure we'll play really well."
