FC Augsburg suffered a 2-1 defeat at home against 1. FC Union Berlin on the final matchday of the season. A last-minute goal left the hosts empty-handed on matchday 34, as FCA ended the season in 12th place.
Head coach Jess Thorup made two changes to his starting line-up, with Phillip Tietz coming into the side in place of the suspended Samuel Essende. Marius Wolf, who had missed the match in Stuttgart due to an abdominal issue, also returned to the starting line-up. Fredrik Jensen and Noahkai Banks, who had both recently recovered from knocks, took their place on the bench.
Augsburg, wearing their new home shirts for the upcoming season for the first time, started well against the Berliners. The first good chance of the afternoon fell to Tietz, but his header was parried by Union goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow (7'). The majority of the action in the first half was concentrated in midfield, with FCA enjoying nearly 65% possession and the visitors waiting for their opportunities to counter.
Chrislain Matsima was the first to make something happen when he played Tietz in behind the back line. The striker remained level-headed to stroke home his seventh goal of the season, finding the near corner. The hosts took a 1-0 lead into the locker room, but it could have been a more resounding advantage should Alexis Claude-Maurice stuck away either of two promising opportunities, narrowly missing the target on both occasions. Referee Dr. Felix Brych, who was taking charge of his 359th and final Bundesliga fixture, subsequently blew the whistle for half time.
Relive: FC Augsburg - 1. FC Union Berlin
Pegged back in stoppage time
The second period started without any changes on either side. The pattern of play also remained the same, with FCA pressing on and looking to combine deep in the opposition half; however, it was a ruthless counterattack from the visitors in the 69th minute which brought about the next goal. Benedict Hollerbach surged into the box on the left-hand side and fired towards the target. Finn Dahmen saved the effort with his face but was unlucky to see the ball fall right at the feet of Andrej Ilic on the back post and he prodded home for 1-1.
FCA did not appear content to sign off with a point, though. Despite their continued pressure in the Union half, it was the Berliners who ultimately found the winning goal. Ilic again came good just seconds before the end, turning into the net at the far post as he latched onto the end of a Khedira cross for 2-1.
With that, FC Augsburg finish the 2024/25 Bundesliga season in 12th place, on 43 points.
