FCA took a huge step towards staying up in the Bundesliga. FCA put in one of their best performances of the season against VfB Stuttgart as they went 3-0 in the first half. The game ended 6-0 to the home side and became the best ever result in Bundesliga history for FC Augsburg. New head coach Martin Schmidt started off his Augsburg career with a super 3-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. For his first home game at his new club, he made three changes compared to the team that started the week before. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who was taken off injured in the game against Frankfurt, was replaced by Andreas Luthe. Kevin Danso and Philipp Max came in for Ja-Cheol Koo and Alfred Finnbogason (both injured). FCA started the game with great intensity and attempted to halt VfB’s energetic play and continued to play with the ball out wide. It didn’t take long for the home crowd to celebrate a goal as Rani Khedira put FCA in front. André Hahn set free Jonathan Schmid down the right wing, who then whipped the ball into the box and a free Rani Khedira volleyed the ball into the back of the net (11’). Hahn doubles the lead, Max scores too Although FCA had taken the lead, Stuttgart were still a threat going forward. Mario Gomez had an effort parried away by Luthe (14’). Up the other end, the home team doubled their lead, this time Hahn finding the bottom corner of the net after controlling the ball well from a Schmidt corner (18’). Although the away side tried to control the game, FCA were tough in the tackle and didn’t allow the visiting team to settle on the ball. Augsburg were finding a lot of joy going forward, with some nice interplay being shown. After winning the ball in midfield, Augsburg countered devastatingly, with Richter playing the ball into Max who chipped the ball over Zieler to make it 3-0 (29’). Just before half-time, Moravek came on to replace the injured Khedira (37’). FCA don’t let up and continue scoring With the break over, both teams had early chances in the second half. Richter had an effort saved by Zieler whilst down the other end, Luthe denied Anastasios Donis. However, it didn’t take long for Augsburg to further their lead. Marco Richter this time got on the score sheet with an effort from outside the box (53’). Only five minutes later, Max got on the score sheet again, this time Hahn being the provider. Although the home team were 5-0 up, they did not stop going for goal. Hahn (62’) and Max (67’) both had efforts saved by the keeper. VfB Stuttgart also had a huge chance as Daniel Didavi had an effort come off the post (64’). Luthe also made some big saves to deny Nicolas Gonzalez and Mario Gomez (66’). Second brace of the game: Richter scores again In the 68th minute, Richter scored the second brace of the afternoon to make the score 6-0. Then onwards, both teams had some chances but were not of any significance. With their 6-0 victory, FCA are now ten points above the relegation play-off place with four games to go and celebrated their best ever Bundesliga result. On Friday 26th April (20:30 CEST), FCA return to action at home against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, needing just one more victory to secure Bundesliga safety.
