Gruezo and Ecuador take a big step towards World Cup qualification

Carlos Gruezo and Ecuador are on track to qualify for the World Cup, while Fredrik Jensen and Finland narrowly missed out on making the play-offs for next year’s tournament. Lasse Günther and Frederik Winther also featured for their nation’s youth sides.

Carlos Gruezo and Ecuador took another big step towards directly qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar by beating Chile 2-0. They are now five points clear of fifth place in the group, putting them in a great position with just four games to go. Gruezo played the full 90 minutes in the match against Chile.

Fredrik Jensen and Finland narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs after losing 2-0 to world champions France. They ended Group D in third place, just one point behind Ukraine in second. Jensen remained an unused substitute for the game in Helsinki.

Denmark U21s, with Frederik Winther playing the full game, defeated Turkey 2-1. They are now second in their qualifying group for the next U21 European Championship.

Lasse Günther also featured in a youth international, appearing for Germany U19s in their 1-1 draw with Greece. Germany are now second in the qualifying group for the next EUROs behind Russia.
