Gregoritsch and Austria go top of the group

Finnbogason's Iceland beaten. Uduokhai, Vargas and Koubek unused subs

First Team 16.11.2020, 10:38

While Michael Gregoritsch and the Austria national team claimed top spot in their Nations League group, Alfred Finnbogason and Iceland suffered another defeat.

After a spectacular end to the game, Austria ran out 2-1 winners against Northern Ireland. Michael Gregortisch started the game and was taken off after just over an hour with the match still goalless. In the 74th minute, Josh Magennis put Northern Ireland in front, only for Louis Schaub (81’) and Adrian Grbic (88’) to turn the game in Austria’s favour late on. The three points saw Austria overtake Norway, who have a game in hand, to the top of their group.

Elsewhere, Alfred Finnbogason’s Iceland were beaten 2-1 by Denmark, making it five defeats from five. Christian Eriksen put the Danes ahead from the penalty spot early on and then again in stoppage time, after Vida Kjartansson had equalised in the 85th minute. Finnbogason was brought on as a late substitute.

Felix Uduokhai’s wait for his first international appearance goes on - he watched from the bench as Germany came from behind to beat Ukraine 3-1. Germany’s next game is against Spain on Tuesday night (17 November, 20:45 CET). Ruben Vargas and Tomáš Koubek were also unused substitutes in Switzerland’s 1-1 draw with Soain and Czech Republic’s 1-0 win against Israel.
