Finnbogason misses out on the Euros – Gruezo on the scoresheet

Gumny makes international debut

Alfred Finnbogason and Iceland dramatically missed on qualification for next summer’s European Championship last night. Carlos Gruezo, on the other hand, was the match winner for his nation. Robert Gumny made his Poland debut on Wednesday night.

Alfred Finnbogason & Co. were on course for qualification in their play-off against Hungary thanks to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s early goal (11’). ‘Finnbo’ came off before the end and had to watch as his side suffered a late heartback. Loic Nego equalised with just two minutes to play (88’) and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed Hungary’s place in the dying moments (92’).

Carlos Gruezo and Ecuador enjoyed a better evening, beating Bolivia 3-2. Juan Carlos Arce had put Bolivia ahead (37’), before Beder Caicedo (46’) and Angel Mena (55’) turned the game around after the break. Marcelo Moreno equalised (60’), however FCA’s midfielder scored from the spot late on to seal the win (88’). Ecuador are now third in their World Cup qualification group with two wins from three games so far.

Uduokhai has to remain patient

A few days after his first start for FC Augsburg, Robert Gumny made his debut for Poland in their 2-0 victory over Ukraine on Wednesday. Poland’s goals came through Krzysztof Piatek (40’) and Jakub Moder (63’), with Gumny starting the game, being brought off in the latter stages.

Felix Uduokhai, meanwhile, was made to wait for his Germany debut. Joachim Löw’s team defeated Czech Republic 1-0 with the 23-year-old an unused substitute. Former FCA man Philipp Max assisted the only goal of the game, scored by Luca Waldschmidt in the 13th minute. Tomáš Koubek was an unused substitute for the Czech side.

Michael Gregoritsch was an unused substitute in Austria’s 3-0 win against Luxembourg, while Ruben Vargas came on from the bench for Switzerland, who were defeated 2-1 by Belgium. Wolfsburg’s Admir Mehmedi gave ‘Nati’ the lead (12’), before a Michy Batshuayi double (49’, 70’) turned the game around in Belgium’s favour.
