FC Augsburg begin training for the new season

First Team 04.08.2020, 12:00

After a summer break of around four weeks, the FC Augsburg squad began preparations for the 2020/21 season with a return to training on Monday. Day one saw the players go through fitness and performance tests.

Monday’s programme at the Rosenau contained a lactate endurance test, amongst other various tests. Three new signings, all of whom joined the club on free transfers following last season’s conclusion, were also put through their paces. These players were Rafał Gikiewicz (joined from 1. FC Union Berlin), Tobias Strobl (Borussia Mönchengladbach), and Daniel Caligiuri (FC Schalke 04).

No longer with the club are the goalkeepers Andreas Luthe and Fabian Giefer, who have left FC Augsburg for Union Berlin and Kickers Würzburg respectively. Also absent from training was defender Kevin Danso, who will enjoy a few more days of holiday after spending the previous season on loan at Southampton FC, where the Premier League season finished later than that of the Bundesliga. Georg Teigl and Julian Schieber were not obligated to complete the fitness tests as they are training individually, and will hopefully have the opportunity to find a new club.

Positive Coronavirus test for Felix Götze

One player who was unable to take part in the first day of training was Felix Götze, who tested positive for COVID-19 after somebody close to the player also received a positive test result during the break. The midfielder is completely asmptomatic and had absolutely no contact with his teammates or coaching staff prior to the start of training. He is currently isolating at home and can join the team after receiving two negative test results.

The 2020/21 Bundesliga season starts on Friday, 18th September. One week before this, Augsburg will play their first competitive match – the club will face an unconfirmed opponent from Lower Saxony in the First Round of the DFB Pokal.
