FC Augsburg have strengthened their attack with the signing of Fabian Rieder. The Switzerland international has made the switch from French first-division side Stade Rennais FC and penned a long-term contract with FCA until 30th June 2030. Both clubs have opted not to disclose the finer details of the transfer.

Rieder was on loan at VfB Stuttgart last season and helped Sebastian Hoeneß’s side win the DFB-Pokal. The 23-year-old played 21 Bundesliga matches and four DFB-Pokal games, as well as making eight appearances in the Champions League. In all competitions, he registered nine goal involvements (two goals, seven assists). Thanks to his technical ability, he is a versatile operator who is just as comfortable playing on the wing as he is in the middle of the park. He won the Swiss championship three times with boyhood club Young Boys and has been capped 19 times by his country, with one international goal to his name.

“In Fabian, we’ve managed to sign an internationally experienced and sought-after player for FCA. He has impressive vision and a great left foot. He’s also got a lot of stamina and embodies the character that we want to see on the pitch,” said FCA’s sporting director Benni Webster.

“The talks with the board and the head coach were great, so it didn’t take long for me to get excited by the idea of moving to Augsburg. I think that FCA will provide the optimal conditions for my sporting and personal development. I’m really looking forward to the coming years and playing in my first home game at the WWK ARENA,” said Fabian Rieder, who will wear the number 32 for FCA.

On Monday evening, Fabian Rieder will join up with the Switzerland national team ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Kosovo and Slovenia.
